City Morgue - TOXIC BOOGALOO: Project Review

Updated: Sep 4, 2020

City Morgue is known to be an intense, high energy group. Loud, raw and grainy. Obviously, nothing has changed based on their album “TOXIC BOOGALOO”. The rap metal duo have come out with another insane, wall shaking album and we’re here for it.

The tracklist is 10 songs long, with a mere 18 minute runtime.

TRACKLIST:

  1. THE ELECTRIC EXPERIENCE

  2. HURTWORLD ‘99

  3. YELLOW PISS

  4. BUAKAW

  5. YAKUZA

  6. CRANK

  7. YOU CAN SMD

  8. ALL KILLER NO FILLER

  9. SUPER SOAKA

  10. PROSTHETIC LEGS

City Morgue may not jump out at you as a must-listen artist. That’s a fair thing to say given the sheer edginess of their discography. They don’t shy away from anyone or anything and their music truly shows it.

This album truly is an explosive piece of work from start to finish, that’s all that can be said.

TOP 5 TRACKS

YELLOW PISS (5/10)

This is one of the more deconstructed songs on the album, with a shrieking guitar and a raspy performance from both of these guys. The 808 is quite literally electric, you can almost feel it in your chest while they dig into the track.

The fun part about this track is the ad libs, they both decided to give the song a certain twang and it really worked in their favour.

BUAKAW (5/10)

The buildup to this song is really what makes it so fun to hear. The way the guitar slowly starts to rise in volume before the drum beat hits gets you so energised in every fibre of your body.

The siren in the background of this instrumental is a nice touch too, it gives the song a lot more depth. Both ZillaKami and SosMula decided to go hard on this track, it’s great to hear.

HURTWORLD ‘99 (6/10)

This song really has a classic rock strum to kick off, but once that kick and high hat combo hits it’s over. The song is catchy, and could easily start a riot on sight.

Once again, both ZillaKami and SosMula put on strong lyrical performances, with great wordplay and flow to boot.

YOU CAN SMD (6/10)

The guitar on this track is incredible. It’s an earworm, digging its heels into the instrumental while the 808 seems to break the bass on your speaker.

City Morgue definitely decided to flip off anyone and everyone who hates on them, it’s just a wall shaking, powerful, kicking beat. There’s nothing else to say.

CRANK (6/10)

Crank was by and large the best track on this project. With a deep bassline, 808 and guitar combo to start, you already know the song is gonna go hard.

The flows are insane, and you can tell they both decided to try different things. The variation is always appreciated. The track in whole is gritty, both due to the production and the fire performances from both ZillaKami and SosMula.

Overall, although the project is only 18 minutes, it packs a punch. The production is dense and layered, while the performances from both of these guys is impressive, barring a few misses on the album such as “YAKUZA”, which seemed like it was mostly filler.

This is the fine line this duo is sitting on throughout the project, as they can very easily slip into a very basic, almost uninspired performance if they’re not careful. They did do so a couple of times on the project which was disappointing to see but not surprising.

Overall, City Morgue’s “TOXIC BOOGALOO” receives a 5/10 from The 8OH8.
